As I researched for this two part episode, I was not too surprised to be reminded of how expensive medications in the US are for patients, but I was surprised by how much variance there is in cost from one person to the next, one plan to the next, etc.
In episode 1, I explained how we got to where we are today with such a screwed up, expensive, opaque Pharma system. The rise of PBMs, pharmacy benefit managers, in particular is worrisome and troubling. We all have to face the fact that today's healthcare system is a business, and that we are consumers, but that doesn't mean that we have to stand by quietly as more and more middlemen join the party to drive our cost up.
In episode 2 I knew we'd all need at least a little good news, so I did a deep dive on ways to save on your meds at the register. There are all sorts of companies that have popped up to help, mostly for-profit, but a couple of non-profits as well. There are coupons to be found, deals to be had, and savings clubs to join. Am I giving you work to do? Yes, because you work hard for your money and shouldn't give it away needlessly.
